Daytime fatigue is most commonly associated with insufficient sleep, stress, an excessive workload or drinking too much coffee. These are, of course, important factors, but the role of the gut is also increasingly discussed in relation to everyday well-being. There is a good reason for this. The gut is responsible not only for digestion but also participates in processes related to metabolism, immunity and communication with the nervous system.
The gut microbiota, meaning the community of microorganisms living in the digestive tract, may influence how the body functions on a daily basis. How Can the Gut Be Connected to Energy Levels?
One important mechanism is the way in which the microbiota processes nutrients from the diet. Gut bacteria are involved, among other things, in the fermentation of dietary fibre. This process produces short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate, acetate and propionate. These compounds are being studied for their potential effects on the gut environment, intestinal barrier and metabolic processes.
A diet low in fibre, irregular meals, excessive consumption of highly processed foods and insufficient intake of vegetables may not support microbiota diversity. In contrast, a more varied diet rich in plant-based foods may support the everyday functioning of the digestive system. This may contribute to digestive comfort, regular bowel movements and the body’s overall functioning.
In practice, many people experience drops in energy not because they simply “lack strength,” but because their daily routine is chaotic. Coffee instead of breakfast, long breaks between meals, a quick sugary snack, insufficient water and a heavy evening meal can contribute to drowsiness, a feeling of heaviness and reduced concentration. The gut also responds to this kind of routine.

The gut and the brain are connected through the so-called gut–brain axis. This communication involves the nervous and immune systems, hormones and compounds produced by the microbiota. This is why stress so often affects the digestive system. Before an important meeting, examination or journey, a person may experience cramps, abdominal rumbling, loss of appetite or a sudden need to use the toilet.
This relationship also works in the opposite direction. When the digestive system is overloaded and symptoms such as discomfort, bloating, irregular bowel movements or a feeling of heaviness occur, concentration and comfort throughout the day may also decline. It is difficult to feel light and active when the body is constantly signalling discomfort in the abdominal area.
However, this does not mean that probiotic supplementation alone will solve the problem of fatigue. It is better to view gut health as part of a broader picture. Diet, sleep, hydration, stress, physical activity and a regular daily routine all play an important role.
Can a Probiotic Increase Energy Levels?
A probiotic should not be treated as a product that directly “provides energy.” A dietary supplement cannot replace sleep, balanced meals, medical treatment or proper diagnosis. It may, however, form part of everyday care for the gut microbiota, particularly during periods when the body is under greater strain, such as after antibiotic treatment, an infection, a dietary change or while travelling.

These experiences depend on many different factors.

Basic everyday habits are the most important. It is advisable to eat regularly, drink an appropriate amount of water and gradually increase the amount of fibre in the diet. Good choices include vegetables, fruit, oats, groats, wholegrain bread, nuts, seeds, pulses and fermented dairy products, provided they are well tolerated.
It is also important not to increase fibre intake too rapidly. In people with sensitive digestive systems, this may result in bloating and discomfort. It is better to introduce changes gradually and observe how the body responds.
Sleep also affects energy levels. Late, heavy evening meals, eating at night, alcohol and consuming large amounts of caffeine in the afternoon may reduce the quality of recovery. Poor sleep often leads to stronger cravings for sugary snacks the following day, which may contribute to further fluctuations in energy.

When fatigue persists for a long time, becomes more severe or occurs together with other symptoms, it is advisable to consult a doctor. Particular attention should be paid to symptoms such as weight loss, chronic diarrhoea, blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, fever, shortness of breath, heart palpitations or a significant decline in mood.
In such situations, supplementation alone should not be relied upon. Fatigue may result from nutritional deficiencies, hormonal disorders, chronic diseases, infections or other health conditions that require proper diagnosis.

A probiotic may complement such a routine when used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. However, it should not replace a healthy diet, adequate recovery or consultation with a healthcare professional when fatigue persists for an extended period.
