What Is the Narine Bacterium?

Narine is a lactic acid bacterium known as Lactobacillus acidophilus n. v. Er 317/402. The strain was first isolated in the 1950s in Armenia by the team of Professor Levon Erzinkyan. When used to treat the professor’s granddaughter suffering from a severe intestinal infection, likely caused by rotavirus, the bacterium led to a full recovery. In her honor, the strain was named Narine. The exceptional properties of Lactobacillus acidophilus quickly drew scientific attention, and Narine became highly valued in Armenia, where it remains popular to this day.
